Intensity Believability of An Actor

Jan 11th, 2009 by Alan Yu

Today was the season premiere of 24 and of course as a fan I tuned in. I am going to be writing what may be spoilers, so don’t read if you haven’t seen scene.

While watching the show it reminded me on how good character development and camera angles play such a big role in creating the overall intensity of the scene regardless of the resources available. Example, there was one scene where Jack Bauer was trying to get answers from the guy and I guess you know that he is going to hurt someone normally if he has to.

He then grabs this ordinary pen from the table and it looked like he was to press it on the guy’s face really hard. You’d think that the object would have to be say a knife, but the moment he grabbed that pen it already got me thinking “Holy crap”.

Situations like those make me appreciate it more from an acting point of view too. For example, in a violent scene it is easy and cliché to say point a gun or knife at someone to create a “oh no” type of intense situation. However, to be able to use what normally is viewed as a harmless object like a pen and make you squirm the same way takes a lot more skill in the character acting and technical direction I’d say.

For the most part I have done dramatic and comedic roles mainly, but I think it would be interesting to do something challenging of that nature in the future.
