Creating Opportunities Through Like Minded people

Apr 3rd, 2009 by Alan Yu

It appears that some people that I met on a previous set are trying to make a short film and asked if I could help. I agreed as I am always interested in doing film work regardless if there is pay or not. It was interesting too as this made me think how if you just surround yourself with more like minded people it indirectly creates opportunities.

This concept is very true when it comes to business when it comes to attracting clients and building future opportunities. Should be a no brainer then when it comes to trying to develop and acting career huh? Considering you pretty much have to find a way to get yourself out there.

Alright, so I’m still waiting to meet all of the Asians that are trying to make it into the film business as I’m sure there must be a ton of people that want to try and do some creative things since it appears at this point you have to create your own work to get things going.

Let’s see…maybe we can all create a global Youtube video film. Asian actors from different countries/cities preparing a scene/skit of some sort. Wouldn’t that be something.

I think you’re idea of finding people you get along with and helping each other out is a great idea.

But really other Asians is a little restrictive, no? Shouldn’t it be anyone that’s cool? Not that I’m trying to make you open up your global Youtube video film club to white people or anything…

lol. That wasn’t meant to be an ethnic specific casting call or anything. I just blurted that out because well………from my experience being a minority poses more challenges here in trying to get opportunities from a mainstream point of view as many times an ethnic specific role is written off for what seems to be business reasons.

Most Asians I know here in film try to be something else such as an editor, writer, etc. It is my belief that this is one of those things where you have to start creating your own work to a certain degree as oppose to waiting for acceptance as there is unfortunately a casting prejudice of sort (Think shows like that Samurai Girl as an example). Serious Asian actors are harder to meet here I’d say. If this was like Hong Kong I would be saying the opposite.

In general though, I think I posted many times that I was interested in doing crazy things like this with any serious actors that want to. Yet to meet anyone of any race that is gutsy and committed enough to do it though. These are all just thoughts so far too.
